Tolerance Village in the Framework of Social Transformation and Positive Peace

Abstract
Research Aims: This study aims to analyze the contribution of Tolerance Village Paledang in Bandung City in realizing social transformation and building positive peace within a multicultural society.
Design/methodology/approach: The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study and phenomenological design. It explores practices of tolerance carried out by residents, such as interfaith dialogue, community cooperation (gotong royong), joint celebration of religious holidays, as well as social and spatial adaptation within the settlement environment.
Research Findings: The findings show that Tolerance Village successfully creates an inclusive living space through the internalization of peace values, solidarity among residents, and the coexistence of three houses of worship standing side by side without conflict. Community-based peacebuilding implemented through a bottom-up process strengthens social cohesion and produces peace that is not merely the absence of conflict (negative peace), but also includes justice, recognition, and harmony (positive peace). Theoretical Contribution/Originality: This study contributes to the discourse on community-based peacebuilding by demonstrating how grassroots initiatives such as a Tolerance Village can become a model of inclusive social transformation. It highlights the importance of cultural values, interfaith dialogue, and collaborative practices in creating sustainable positive peace, while offering recommendations for replication in other multicultural regions.
